Ask Away
1. What inspires you to write?
Everyday life is my inspiration. I tend to people watch a lot, and I overhear the funniest things while grocery shopping with my parents or hanging out on campus. It always seems to spark something in me. Also, deadlines are pretty inspiring. I tend to write more when I’m frustrated, too. It’s a great outlet for me. |
2. Is there a specific genre you love to write?
I love murder mysteries! They’re so exciting, and I enjoy writing out how a character died. Explaining a crime scene always brings me joy.

3. Do you only write books or are there other forms of writing you enjoy?
I will admit, my creativity flows better when I’m writing a book, but I do enjoy writing devotions. I’ve had a few published, and it’s a great way for me to be more open about how God is working in my life. Right now, however, my main focus is writing books.

4. Are there other authors that inspire you in your writing?
I enjoy the Magical Cat Mystery Series by Sofie Kelly and the Ghost Hunter Mystery Series by Victoria Laurie. Both of these series gave me my foundation in mystery writing and are great books in general.

5. What is your process for writing a new book?
I would love to say a lot of careful planning goes into each book. In reality, I throw my main character into a situation and they figure out how to get out of it themselves. My characters control the story. I’m just alongside them to write down their adventures. I also handwrite all of my first drafts, too. I do that because carrying a composition notebook is easier than a laptop, especially when you’re writing on location like I do for one of my mystery series.

6. Are you published, and if so, what works of yours are published?
I am published! I’ve been published twenty-six times, varying between devotions, articles, book review, and being featured on the Professional Writing department's blog. A few of my articles are online and links to them are on my website. Unfortunately, the original links to the devotions are not available because the website I submit devotions to doesn’t archive what it publishes. I will make them available on my website in the near future.

7. What are you currently working on right now?
I’m currently working on cleaning up the first book in my series called the Dynasty River Mysteries. It’s somewhere between a middle-grade or young adult murder mystery series, but I think anyone can read them. The first four books are completed. I plan for that series to span at least six books, seven if I feel like it’s necessary.

8. Where do you hope to be in five years in your writing career?
My hope is that the Dynasty River series has a publishing contract and I’m spending the majority of my free time writing books. The likelihood of that is slim, sadly. If that doesn’t work, I would like to work for Alternative Press magazine. I love a lot of the musical artists they write about and would love to interview them for articles and such. It seems like a really cool place to work. Or the FBI. They need writers, too!
